Coccoloba
Family: Polygonaceae
This large genus of evergreen trees and shrubs originates from tropical and subtropical America. They are not often grown outside their native country.
Species
C. diversifolia, pigeon plum, is a tall shrub, to 3 m (10 ft), with shiny, bright green leaves and spikes of pale, yellowish green flowers in summer, followed by reddish purple fruits.
C. uvifera, sea grape, is also a small tree, but it grows taller, to about 6 m (20 ft). It has heartshaped, shiny, leathery leaves and long sprays of fragrant, white flowers, followed by bunches of reddish purple, edible fruits resembling grapes. It is resistant to salt spray and wind.
Cultivation
In frost-prone climates, grow in a warm greenhouse or conservatory in pots of soil-based potting compost. Outdoors, they grow best in a fertile, sandy soil in full sun. Propagate from seed, semi-ripe cuttings or by layering.
