Clitoria
Family: Papilionaceae
Common Name: Butterfly Pea, Pigeon Wings
This genus of delightful shrubs and perennials, native to tropical regions, generally has a climbing habit. In cool and cold climates prone to frost, they are grown in a warm greenhouse or conservatory. The showy flowers are characteristic of the pea family. The small, alternate, pinnate leaves are mid-green on top and gray or paler green on the undersides.
Species
C. cajanifolia (Synonym: C. laurifolia), a herb to about 60 cm (24 in), is sometimes grown in tropical regions as a cover crop. It has oblong leaves, notched at the apex and pale and softly hairy on the undersides, and lilac-violet flowers.
C. ternatea, the most commonly cultivated, is a lovely twining species to 4.5 m (15 ft). It has oblong-ovate leaves, beautiful, bright blue flowers, with greenish yellow centers, and flat, pea-like pods. It is also found in white and double-flowered forms.
