Chorizema
Family: Papilionaceae
This genus of some 18 species of decorative shrubs, mostly native to Western Australia, are hardy and quite easy to grow in the right climate and conditions. They have simple, alternate leaves and produce abundant sprays of orange and red pea flowers.
Species
C. cordatum, Western Australian flame pea, is the most widely cultivated of the species. It has thin, weak branches and prolific, loose sprays of yellow, orange, red and cerise flowers in late winter and spring. It grows to 1.5m (5ft).
Cultivation
They are grown in a cool greenhouse or conservatory in areas where hard frosts are likely. Grow in pots of acid, soil-based or soilless compost, in good light with shade from direct sun, and with ample ventilation. Outdoors, grow in well-drained, acid or neutral, humus-rich soil, in full sun. Propagate from seed after soaking in hot water.
