Of this small genus of flowering shrubs from China and Japan, only one species is generally cultivated.
Species
C. praecox is a richly perfumed, deciduous shrub growing to 3 m (10 ft). The yellow and red flowers are borne on its bare branches during winter. Dried flowers can be used like lavender to scent linen closets.
Cultivation
Winter sweet likes a cool climate, rich soil, a sunny, sheltered position and plenty of water in dry weather. Plant in spring or autumn. Regular pruning is not needed. Propagate by layering in spring or from softwood cuttings in spring, rooted under glass.
