Common Name: Shell Flower, Turtlehead
The genus name derives from the Greek kelone, a tortoise, referring to the hooded, gaping flowers which also gave rise to the common name, turtlehead. Most of these gaudy, North American perennials have ovate, toothed, shiny leaves.
Species
C. glabra, zone 3, has lance-shaped leaves, to 15 cm (6 in), and white or pinkish flowers, bearded on the lower lip. It grows to 1 m (3 ft).
C. lyonii, zone 8, has ovate leaves and rosy purple flowers, and grows to 1 m (3 ft).
C. obliqua, zone 6, grows to 60 cm (24 in). It has rose-coloured flowers, the lower lip bearded and pale yellow.
Cultivation
These plants like a rich soil, sun or partial shade, and regular water. Propagate by seed or by division in early spring.
