This genus of tall, night-flowering cactuses, found throughout South America, comprises 25 species.

Species

C. peruvianus is a popular cactus which grows erect to around 5 m (16 ft). It has deep green-blue, ribbed sterns and downy, brown areoles with yellow spines. The fragrant, nocturnal, white and brown-green summer flowers are followed by red, globe-shaped fruit. This species may also be sold as C. uruguayanus.

Cultivation

These cactuses are generally grown in pots of well-drained cactus compost in an intermediate greenhouse or in a conservatory. Provide maximum light. Water regularly in spring and summer but keep dry in winter. Can be grown outdoors in relatively frost-free regions.
