Centella

Family: Apiaceae

This genus of small, evergreen plants is mostly native to South Africa, with one species extending throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

Species

C. asiatica (Synonym: Hydrocotyle asiatica, C. cordifolia) is found in many parts of the world and is said to lessen the effects of arthritis. It also has many applications in folk medicine, being used as a healing agent. A prostrate, spreading plant, to 1-2 m (3-6 ft), with round or kidney-shaped leaves, it inhabits the margins of swamps and other wet spots. Though it is somewhat invasive, its preferences make it a useful groundcover for boggy places and poolsides in either shady or open positions.

Cultivation

Not very widely grown, this genus needs a cool greenhouse in frost-prone climates. Propagate from cuttings or stem divisions, with roots attached. It requires ample water during warm months and at least half a day's sun.

Climate

These plants grow in zone 9 it relatively frost-free.
