Cedrela

Synonyms: Toona

There are six species in this genus, now correctly known as Toona, which is native to tropical America and Asia. They may be deciduous or evergreen. Although not true cedars, their reddish, aromatic heartwood resembles cedar.

Species

In the UK, the deciduous C. sinensis, zone 6, is the species usually grown.

C. odorata, cigar box cedar, from the West Indies, grows between 1S and 25 m (50-80 ft) tall and produces an aromatic timber which is used to make mothproof chests and cigar boxes.

Cultivation

These trees are normally grown in the tropics, although the hardy C. sinensis is grown as a specimen tree. Grow in well-drained soil and full sun.

Climate

Most of these species need a tropical climate.
