Carissa

Family: Apocynaceae

Cultivated widely in tropical areas throughout the world, Carissa is grown in cool greenhouses or conservatories in most parts of North America. In suitable climates, it can be grown in shrub or mixed borders or it can equally well be used for hedging.

Species

C. bispinosa, hedge thorn, has white flowers in spring and red berries. This species grows to 2 m (6 ft). C. macrocarpa, Natal plum, grows to around 5 m (16 ft) high. Cultivated as a hedge plant, especially in its native South Africa, the fruit is popular for use in making jams and preserves.

Cultivation

Grow in pots of soil-based potting compost under glass and provide maximum light but shade from direct sun. Prune back to restrict size after flowering if necessary. Outdoors, hedges are trimmed when flowering is over. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer.

Climate

Zone 10 and above.
