Cardiocrinum
Family: Liliaceae
These giant lilies from eastern Asia and the Himalayas were formerly included in the genus Lilium.
Species
C. giganteum grows with towering majesty to 2-3 m (6-10 ft) in height. The large, funnel-shaped, white, fragrant flowers are borne almost horizontally. The trumpet-shaped flowers have deep pink stripes inside.
Cultivation
Most species are fairly rare and are difficult to grow unless the climatic conditions are right. Plant the bulbs in autumn just below the surface, with plenty of space between the bulbs to achieve the best effect. They like partial shade and cool soil. Seed should he freshly gathered and sown in autumn. They may take up to five years to flower. The main bulb dies after flowering and setting seed, but the plant continues to survive through offset bulbs produced around the main bulb.
