Caltha

Family: Ranunculaceae
Common Name: Marsh Marigold

These plants are found growing in bogs and marshes, and on banks of lakes and streams, in Europe, North America, Mexico and parts of Asia. They generally have heart-shaped, plain leaves and yellow or white flowers. Marsh marigolds are pretty planted around garden ponds.

Species

C. leptosepala has leaves 10 cm (4 in) long and small, silvery white flowers. It grows to 30 cm (12 in).

C. palustris, marsh marigold or kingcup, is a very hardy, deciduous or semi-evergreen perennial which grows 30-60 cm (12-24 in). It has dark green, rounded leaves and beautiful, bright yellow flowers, 5 cm (2 in) across, which provide excellent colour in spring. The cultivar 'Fiore Pleno' is stunning, with double, brilliant yellow flowers and is the most popular marsh marigold.

Cultivation

Caltha likes an open, sunny position and wet soil. The water supply should not be stagnant. To propagate, lift and divide the roots in spring after flowering.
