Calceolaria
Family: Scrophulariaceae
Common Name: Slipper Flower, Pouch Flower
Deriving from the Latin calceolus, a slipper or small shoe, the name of this genus refers to the curious, pouch-like flowers which come in vivid red through to yellow, pink and mauve, with contrasting blotchings and markings. The large, crinkled, spreading leaves are also attractive. Hybridization has resulted in many improved blooms and many magnificent colours.
Species
Although the genus is large and comprises annuals, biennials, perennials and shrubby plants, the main one that is cultivated is the C. Herbeohybrida Group of cultivars which are biennials. 'They make excellent pot plants and the pouched flowers come in brilliant colours including red, yellow and orange, often with brightly contrasting spots.
Cultivation
The large-flowered hybrid calceolarias are mainly grown as annuals or biennials in cool greenhouses or conservatories. They require a rich, free-draining potting mix and bright light without direct sun, and regular watering. However, do not allow the compost to become excessively wet. The C. Herbeohybrida Group cultivars are raised from seed sown either in spring or in late summer. Do not cover the seeds with compost. Germinate at 18°C (64°F).
