Burchellia
Family: Rubiaceae
Common Name: Buffalo-wood, Wild Pomegranate
This genus consists of only one species - an evergreen shrub, native to South Africa.
Species
B. bubalina is the sole species of the genus. It has glossy, wavy leaves, to 10 cm (4 in), and clusters of swollen, tube-like, bright red flowers, about 2.5 cm (1 in) long, during spring or summer.
Cultivation
In climates prone to hard frosts, grow in a cool greenhouse in pots of soil-basedpotting compost and in maximum light. Outdoors, the buffalo-wood needs to be grown in a warm, sheltered position in free-draining soil enriched with compost or manure. It does not usually need to be pruned. Propagate from semi-hardwood cuttings taken in late summer or autumn.
