From Siberia and the Mediterranean, these perennials are generally grown only in cool climates. They have hairy stems, oval leaves and broad clusters of small blue flowers. They are often grown as groundcover or as border plants.
Species
B. macrophylla grows to 45 cm (18 in), with slender stems, basal leaves and blue summer flowers, about 6 mm (¼ in) across. There are several cultivars of this species, including 'Dawson's White' which has leaves with wide, creamy white margins.
Cultivation
Brunnera will grow successfully in ordinary, moist, well-drained garden soil in semi-shade. Propagate by root cuttings during the winter.
Climate
This plant is very hardy and will thrive in zone 3.
