Brugmansia
Family: Solanaceae
Common Name: Angel's Trumpet
These large shrubs or small trees originate from South America, many from the Andes. All have narcotic alkaloid properties but are widely grown as ornamentals in warm regions. They have simple leaves and large, pendulous, trumpet-shaped flowers with flaring mouths which are very striking.
Species
B. arborea occurs from Ecuador to northern Chile. It grows 2-4 m (6-12 ft), with pure white trumpet flowers.
B. x candida, widely grown in South America, has mostly white flowers, occasionally yellow or pink. It grows 3-6 m (10-20 ft).
B. sanguinea, 10-12 m (33-40 ft), has red flowers, ageing to yellow.
B. suaveolens, 2-4 m (6-12 ft), is a commonly grown species and has white trumpet flowers which are fragrant at night.
Cultivation
In areas subject to regular hard frosts, brugmansias are grown in a cool greenhouse or conservatory. Use large pots or tubs and a soil-based potting compost. Provide maximum light. Keep only just moist in winter. Plants can be placed outside for the summer. For outdoor cultivation, grow in any moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, with shelter from very strong winds.
Climate
Zone 9 and above.
