Browallia

Family: Solanaceae

Native to South America, these annuals or perennials have pretty blue, violet or white tubular, five-lobed flowers and generally simple leaves. They are tender plants which are grown as pot plants to decorate greenhouses or conservatories (intermediate conditions are required for these plants).

Species

B. americana is a glabrous annual, with oval leaves to 7 cm (23 in) long and blue or violet flowers. It grows to 60 cm (24 in). The cultivar 'Caerulea' has pale blue flowers and 'Nana' is a dwarf plant in the same colour as the parent.

B. speciosa grows to 1.5 m (5 ft) tall and is shrubby at the base. Usually grown as an annual, it has oval leaves and blue, violet or white flowers. There are several cultivars of both species.

Cultivation

Sow seed in early spring to produce plants for flowering during the summer. Germinate the seed at 18°C (64°F). Seedlings are best potted into soil-based compost. Provide bright light but shade from strong sun. If winter or spring flowering is required, sow seed in late summer.

Climate

Generally grown outdoors only in tropical climates.
