Bowenia
Family: Boweniaceae
This genus of cycads from Australia comprises only two species, with a very restricted distribution, found quite rarely in their native Queensland, Australia. These cycads are characterized by their bipinnate leaves, unlike the other cycad genera which all have pinnate leaves. They have tuberous underground stems, 50 cm (20 in) long arching fronds and spiny, dark green leaflets. The cones are borne close to the ground, the female bearing the seeds which are surounded by blueish gray flesh.
Species
B. serrulata, Byfield fern, is found in a very small area in the north-eastern part of Australia. It is distinguishable by its leaflets which are sharply serrated. The species that is most often grown is B. spectabilis which has very decorative foliage.
Cultivation
These slow-growing plants usually produce only one new frond each year. However, they are fairly easy to grow. They make good house plants or they can be grown in a warm greenhouse or conservatory, in pots of compost consisting of leaf mould, chipped bark and coarse sand or grit in equal parts. Provide bright light but shade from direct sun. In frost-free climates, they can be planted in the garden; grow in partial shade and humus-rich soil.
