These hardy, herbaceous perennials are native to North America and Asia. The flowers are like the Michaelmas daisy (Aster), usually white, purple or violet, and the leaves are alternate.

Species

B. asteroides, false chamomile, a North American species, grows 1.2-2 m (4-6 ft) tall, with lance-shaped leaves which are up to 12 cm (5 in) long. The long, stalkless flowers resemble those of the Michaelmas daisy and are white, violet or purple. Var. latisquama produces sprays of blueish violet flowers. This showy plant grows up to 1.2-1.5 m (4-5 ft). 'Nana', with pinkish rays, grows to 1 m (3 ft).

Cultivation

Suitable for borders or groups, they will take to almost any type of soil and do well both in sun and shade. Plant in autumn for late summer flowers. Propagate by seed or by division of the roots in spring.
