Common Name: Lipstick Tree
This evergreen tree, native to tropical America, is a good subject for a warm greenhouse or conservatory. In frost-free climates it is often grown as a hedge or screen plant.
Species
B. orellana, lipstick tree, is the only species, growing to about 10 m (33 ft). It has long, slightly glossy leaves and sprays of flowers that may be deep rose pink to white. The flowers are followed by bristly reddish fruits containing dark red seeds. The dye obtained from the fruits was originally used by indigenous Americans as body paint. It was also used as a dye for cloth. This dye is almost tasteless and is used nowadays as a food and cosmetic colouring. It is not often grown in the US but is planted in southern Florida.
Cultivation
Under glass, grow in pots of soil-based potting compost. Provide maximum light. If growing outdoors, plant in full sun it well-drained soil which is heavily enriches with organic matter. This tree requires plent) of water in the summer.
