Beaumontia

Family: Apocynaceae
Common Name: Herald's Trumpet, Trumpet Flower

From Indonesia, Malaysia and India, these evergreen vines are grown in subtropical areas for their handsome, deep green leaves, clusters of large, showy, trumpet-shaped, white flowers and their sweet fragrance. In cold climates, they are valued as lovely specimens for the greenhouse.

Species

B. grandiflora, Nepal trumpet flower from India, is the only species cultivated. This beautiful climber, which grows to 3 m (10 ft), needs solid support for its thick stems. It would be suitable for the medium-sized to large conservatory or greenhouse.

Cultivation

In frost-prone climates, grow in an intermediate or warm greenhouse, in pots of soil-based compost or in a soil border, and ensure maximum light. Water very sparingly during the winter, at which time cooler conditions should be provided. Propagate from seed in spring or from semi-ripe cuttings in summer.

Climate

Suitable for growing outdoors in zone 10.
