This small genus of biennial and perennial herbs originates from Asia and Europe. They have an upright, branching habit, sprays of small yellow flowers, feather-shaped leaves sometimes used in salads, and spreading pods. Some of the species have become a nuisance, having developed into weeds.
Species
B. rupicola, a perennial herb from the Mediterranean, is often used as an ornamental. It grows to 30 cm (12 in) and has flowers relatively large for the genus.
B. verna, early cress or Belle Isle cress, is one of the species used as a vegetable, particularly in Britain and Europe.
A biennial, with fairly large, early spring flowers, it grows to 60 cm (24 in).
B. vulgaris, yellow rocket, has become naturalized in North America. It has smallish, bright yellow flowers, glossy deep green leaves, and grows to 30-75 cm (12-30 in). This is the species most often used in cooking. It can become invasive.
Cultivation
Plant in any normal garden soil and water well in summer to avoid drying out. Propagation can be either from cuttings or by division of the roots.
