Rarely cultivated outside specialized herb gardens, these herbaceous, hardy perennials are from North America, Europe and the East.
Species
A. angustifolia subsp. alpina, zone 2, grows to 3S cm (14 in) and has bright yellow-orange flowers in summer.
A. chamissonis, zone 2, has yellow flowers in late summer and grows to 60 cm (24 in).
A. montana, mountain tobacco, zone 6, grows to 30 cm (12 in), with showy yellow flowers in early summer. There is a long history of use of this species for medicinal purposes.
Cultivation
These plants like a sunny location, with an average soil. A. montana will not tolerate lime. Propagate by division of the roots in spring. Plant out either in autumn or spring.
