Originating from South Africa, this attractive evergreen shrub has small leaves, with glandular dots, and single flowers produced on several short twigs, giving the appearance of a cluster.
Species
A. amoena has slender downy shoots and single white flowers with a purple streak at the base of the petals. It grows 30-60 cm (12-24 in).
A. coriacea is a small shrub with tapered leaves and pinkish white flowers.
A. fragrans grows well in most conditions, rarely exceeding 90 cm (36 in) in height and spread. It has long, narrow serrated leaves and densely clustered rose pink flowers. Sweet smelling and long lasting, they are suitable for cut flower arrangements.
A. uniflora has small pointed leaves and single white flowers, streaked with deep rose or crimson, in spring. It will also flourish in most conditions, and reaches 60-90 cm (24-36 in).
Cultivation
All of the species below thrive in frost-free or virtually frost-free Climates and are rarely cultivated outside their country of origin. If necessary protect plants from frost in winter and spring. Any well-drained soil is suitable. Propagate from seed in spring or from semi-ripe cuttings in autumn under glass.
